After receiving overwhelming approval from the University’s Board of Trustees, the Office of Minority Student 项目 became the Office of AHANA Student 项目 (OASP). 今天, OASP发展, 实现了, and contributes a variety of programs and services modeled on the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis, (关心整个人), 支持学生的社交, 文化, 精神发展.

拉美裔拉丁美洲或西班牙后裔

使用请注意虽然在美式英语中经常互换使用, 西班牙裔和拉丁裔并不是完全相同的术语, 在某些情况下,两者之间的选择可能很重要. 拉美裔, 源自拉丁语“西班牙”,具有更广泛的含义, potentially encompassing all Spanish-speaking peoples in both hemispheres and emphasizing the common denominator of language among communities that sometimes have little else in common. Latino which in Spanish means "Latin" but which as an English word is probably a shortening of the Spanish word latinoamericano refers more exclusively to persons or communities of Latin American origin. 两者之中, only 拉美裔 can be used in referring to Spain and its history and culture; a native of Spain residing in the United States is a 拉美裔, 不是拉丁裔, and one cannot substitute Latino in the phrase the 拉美裔 influence on native Mexican cultures without garbling the meaning. 在实践中, 然而, this distinction is of little significance when referring to residents of the United States, most of whom are of Latin American origin and can theoretically be called by either word.

  • A more important distinction concerns the sociopolitical rift that has opened between Latino and 拉美裔 in American usage. 对于说西班牙语的人群来说, Latino is a term of ethnic pride and 拉美裔 a label that borders on the offensive. 根据这种观点, 西班牙语缺乏拉丁语的真实性和文化共鸣, with its Spanish sound and its ability to show the feminine form Latina when used of women. 此外,西班牙语是美国使用的术语.S. Census Bureau and other government agencies is said to bear the stamp of an Anglo establishment far removed from the concerns of the Spanish-speaking community. 虽然这些观点被一些人强烈支持, 它们绝不是普遍的, and the division in usage seems as related to geography as it is to politics, with Latino widely preferred in California and 拉美裔 the more usual term in Florida and Texas. 即使在这些地区, 然而, 用法经常是混合的, and it is not uncommon to find both terms used by the same writer or speaker.

亚洲亚洲人:亚洲本地人或亚洲居民或亚洲人的后裔.

使用请注意Asia is the largest of the continents with more than half the world's population. 尽管严格来说,所有的居民都是亚洲人, in practice this term is applied almost exclusively to the peoples of East, 东南, 和南亚,而不是西南亚的阿拉伯人, 土耳其人, 伊朗人, 库尔德人通常被认为是中东或近东人. 印尼人和菲律宾人被恰当地称为亚洲人, since their island groups are considered part of the 亚洲 continent, 但不是美拉尼西亚人, 密克罗尼西亚, 以及太平洋中部和南部的波利尼西亚人, 他们现在通常被统称为太平洋岛民.

印第安人: 西半球土著居民西半球土著民族的成员. The ancestors of the 印第安人s are generally considered by scientists to have entered the Americas from Asia by way of the Bering Strait sometime during the late glacial epoch.

使用请注意Many Americans have come to prefer 印第安人 over Indian both as a term of respect and as a corrective to the famous misnomer bestowed on the peoples of the Americas by a geographically befuddled Columbus. 这种偏好有充分的理由. 印第安人 eliminates any confusion between indigenous American peoples and the inhabitants of India, 这使得它成为许多官方场合的明确选择. 它在历史上也是准确的, despite the insistence by some that Indians are no more native to America than anyone else since their ancestors are assumed to have migrated here from Asia. But one sense of native is “being a member of the original inhabitants of a particular place,” and 印第安人s' claim to being the original inhabitants of the Americas is unchallenged.

  • 除了精度和精度, 然而, the choice between these two terms is often made as a matter of principle. 对于许多, 印第安人 is the only choice for expressing respect toward America's indigenous peoples; Indian is seen as wrong and offensive. 为他人, the former smacks of bureaucracy and the manipulation of language for political purposes while the latter is the natural English term, 由于长期使用,它的缺陷变得无关紧要. 幸运的是, 近年来,这种争论似乎有所平息, and it is now common to find the two terms used interchangeably in the same piece of writing. Furthermore, the issue has never been particularly divisive between Indians and non-Indians. 同时也欢迎印第安人尊敬的语气, most Indian writers have continued to use the older name at least as often as the newer one.
  • 印第安人 and Indian are not exact equivalents when referring to the aboriginal peoples of Canada and Alaska. 印第安人, 更广泛的术语, 恰当地使用所有这些民族, whereas Indian is customarily used of the northern Athabaskan and Algonquian peoples in contrast to the Eskimos, 因纽特人, 和反对者. Alaska Native (or less commonly Native Alaskan) is also properly used of all indigenous peoples residing in Alaska.
